The oyster we know comes two per bird from where each thigh meets the backbone.
I’ve discovered there are (at least) two styles of Korean fried chicken, one is sauced right before serving and the other served dry. The latter style, characterized by bonchon, is my preference. Our favorite chain serving this style is mad for chicken, to be fair, we’ve only been in their flushing branch, it’s a great space, service is fantastic as is their chicken.
Popeyes is my favorite American style chain, I like it, but given the caloric, sodium and fat ingestion, if I’m going to eat fried chicken, it has to be great, which leaves chains out. I’ve tried krispy krunchy, i think it’s overhyped cause it comes from a gas station/convenience store. Last time we had KFC, I took a bite and tossed it.
I do love Rise chicken and biscuit in nc, stop by every time I’m in the triangle.
Best,
Chicken oysters, and the Pope’s Nose.
Both are only for the Chicken Savants among us.
@ipsedixit already knows this, but…
There’s a Japanese place in town called Binchoyaki. They do skewers and one of the choices is ‘chicken ass’.
The waiters have shirts that say "I eat ass.” I think you can buy one.
I might. They’re really good. The skewers, I mean. The shirts are just kinda funny.
I’ve been to Popeyes once, on the insistence of a friend who was with me. It was so singularly awful — and the place was filthy, to boot — I never went back.

Same article, I think:

We had ‘Chicken Delight’ when I was a kid " Don’t cook tonight, call Chicken Delight".
I loved fried chicken, KFC, Chester Fried, etc. It doesn’t love me anymore.
I always wanted to like Church’s, but they don’t have any spice to them. Biscuits are good, though. Our little grocery store (IGA) is the best because they make it fresh all day, so people come in for it and you keep fresh stocked. Popeye’s, like KFC, suffers from reliance on the dedication of the young folks who work there. Heat lamp= hard fried chicken not worth it.
KFC has dropped way down. Probably 10-15 years since I’ve had any. Big Boy was big when I was growing up.
Anyone remember when Hardee’s when fried chicken? Wasn’t bad. Even grocery store chains have changed for the worse. Fry’s, by my mom in Sun City, AZ was pretty decent for a long time. Something has changed. No cisp, no spice. I dunno. 'T’s why I make my own.
The west just isn’t fried chicken territory in the same sense as midwest and the south.
Almost everything is pressure deep fried.
The debate here is which grocery store has the best. I can’t think of where I could get a real pan fried meal here.
You mean the one that I, as the cook, so richly deserve before serving my family? DEEEEE-LISH!
Which grocer near you do you feel the best. Walmart is a mess, IMO. Fry’s was good, now quite mediocre. I can’t believe that I buy chicken from fricken IGA. It is the best by me, though, just because of the fresh aspect. Breading descent, spices, okay…it’s the freshness part.
A our local Giant makes fresh fried chicken every day. It’s hugely popular, but we haven’t tried it yet. If you time it right, you get the stuff fresh out of the fryer.
I liked Publix fried chicken when I used to visit my sister’s condo in FLA, but it’s been years.
Be sure to try again when you visit next. May have changed, like Fry’s for me.
The only national chains here are KFC and Popeyes. I have access to a Jollybee but I almost feel like that’s its own thing. But to say a couple things about it - The chicken is great at jollybee, but the pieces are way too big. Fried chicken drumsticks shouldn’t be that big, it messes up all the ratios.
I had almost given up on KFC until recently. Their original recipe was always a soggy mess. For those who don’t know, there’s a reason KFC has an “extra crispy” option, and it’s because their broasted original chicken isn’t supposed to get crispy. What it loses in crisp it makes up in flavor and tenderness. There’s really no other chicken like it so it’s almost pointless to compare.
Having said that KFC has really upped their game. Every time I’ve gotten fried chicken there recently it’s been just about perfect. And right now they are rolling out the app deals hard, and with a 2 pc leg/thigh + mashed potato deal, it’s pretty dang great.
The most important thing about KFC that no one seems to know about, is that their chicken sandwich is hands down the best out of the big chains. That’s right, it’s better than Popeyes. ChickFila doesn’t compare with either of those two.
Popeyes is still the same that everyone knows and loves, their batter is a bit unique, it’s not that nice light wavy brown to it. And it’s the least aggressively seasoned, I’d say the most home made tasting of the fried chickens, which is great on its own.
I happen to live in a neighborhood with a lot of “ghetto” chain joints, things like Crown, Kennedy, if you know you know. These places are all about the same and very inexpensive and always pretty dang good.
I would say the best chain chicken out there right now is BB.Q, Korean Fried Chicken joint. But it’s almost not a fair comparison as their prices are 2-3x the national chains.
broasted
No KFC original has ever been anything but pressure fired. That was sort of the whole raison détre of KFC.
I had never heard of Krispy Krunchy so I googled and found out my local Chevron mini-mart has it. I always wondered why there were so many cars there that were not buying gas. One thigh, it was hot, krispy, crunchy, moist, juicy, tender, spicy and greasy. Is greasy a bad thing? It seems to add to the finger lickin’ goodness.

Not quite sure what you’re getting at… did I state anything to the contrary?
I think you said their “broasted Original chicken” which was a little confusing.
