Didn’t want to start a new thread for this so I thought tucking it here might also help those visiting Quincy.
Tried this newish restaurant called Best Duck Cafe in Quincy that opened maybe 7-8 months ago. Specializes in some Cantonese and Sichuan/spicy dishes, but it appears to offering a few ‘authentic’ (per their menu, but I personally have limited experience) of Taishan dishes.
First specialty is a hand shredded chicken where a flavored, poached chicken is shredded and tossed with sesame oil, cilantro, sesame and perhaps other seasoning. Eaten at room temperature, and was so tasty! I also tried their Taishan (Toisan in Cantonese) 5 flavor or spice duck. Where Cantonese roast duck has thin skin with most of the fat rendered, this dish has a moist skin due to it being braised or roasted with a paste and liquids. While I prefer the thin, rendered skin of traditional roast duck, this duck was definitely much more aromatic. You can pre-order a 5 flavor/spice goose for special occasions too. They also had Toisan zongzi (or joong, rice dumpling stuffed with savory filing) for purchase. The owner also noted that on the weekends, they will make roast pork (crunchy skin kind) available.
Just a bit of cultural history. Taishan or Toisan is city in Guangdong province, and is home to many of the earliest immigrants to the US. Many of the oldest Chinatowns were primarily established by Toisan people and spoke both Cantonese and the Toisan dialect.
Worth a visit if you are in the area. The owners also seem really nice, and we love supporting those small local businesses. The restaurants Chinese name is 鹵友記 (Lou Yau Gei, in Cantonese), which suggests they offer a lot of the braised ‘master stock’ foods. Their logo of the smartly dressed duck reads 好duck (ho duck), which is a Cantonese pun of someone who is masterful or someone who is good at what she does. I just found the two names and the pun amusing.
