GOOD EATS NYC 2024 (A Blanket Thread)

thanks @Ziggy for reminding me about Rana 15. its definitely on the list, would love to try their SW turkish specialties (that region has such great fish, meze, salads and lamb/goat!

Plus caramel color, molasses, vinegar, salt and other “natural” flavors.

You need to try Brunch as well. Similar concept as Laser Wolf. Select one dish, get 15

Half a Pastrami sandwich and Pastrami Reuben at S&P Lunch. This is just about as good as I’ve had in NYC. On par or not too far from Katz’s. The fries can use some seasoning but they provide all the sauces to make a nice concoction. Price seems correct compared to others. Eater makes it sound like its cheap but its not. Its not nearly as loaded and shareable as a $30 pastrami.

I walked by Royal Rib yesterday and stuck my head in. It was very crowded, so I lost my nerve and didn’t ask them directly if they cooked with wood as I’d planned. And the cookers are out of sight in the back room. But I will say there wasn’t a trace of smoke smell in the air.

My wife and I are staying in Crown Heights for the month of July and will be traveling around the city to sample restaurants in various neighborhoods. The suggestions from Hungry Onion participants last year were tremendously valuable and any additional suggestions for this year would be very welcome.

Later, I’ll post here some of the more notable meals we have this month.

But first, let me do some very quick hits from some of the places we ate at back in January, on a shorter trip:

The hot dog at Katz’s and the Super Heebster at Russ & Daughters were outstanding, but that’s old news.

Chinese dumplings and congee at Congee Village, Moroccan at Cafe Mogador, the Colombian arepa at Patacon Pisao, and bistro food at Hello Sonny in the East Village/Lower East Side were all very good, but they’re probably not destination restaurants.

The knish we got at the Original Jonah Schimmel Knishes was surprisingly bad (we threw most of it away).

Foul Witch in the East Village lived up to the high praise from everywhere (Pete Wells, New Yorker, Eater.com, the Infatuation).

To me, Camillo in Prospect Lefferts Garden is an excellent Italian restaurant (apparently “Roman”), but I’m a sucker for Italian restaurants in Brooklyn. The first time I ever came to Brooklyn, back in 2002, my wife, high school age daughter, and I stayed in a chain motel in Bay Ridge (which isn’t there anymore). The Village Voice had just published an article on the 70 best Italian restaurants in the city and there was one just down the block from us that ranked about #58 or so. I thought it was the best Italian food I’ve ever had.

The most unexpected delight of the January trip was when we stopped in for afternoon tea at Uluh, a Chinese restaurant in the East Village. The pu’erh tea and pumpkin puffs were elegant and delicious. I’d love to return here for a full meal.

How has Mogador held up?

Yonah Schimmel is unfortunately hit or miss.

Opinions in our group of six were very mixed. Some of us loved it, I thought it was very good, but not more so than the average Moroccan restaurant. I remember the salad as being particularly good.

Interesting.
I used to find them quite variable by type of tagine.
Don’t think I’ve ever had the salad.

I haven’t had a great nyc knish since stahls closed, anyone know where to go for a great one?

I remember the one at Barney Greengrass being pretty good.

Thanks!

I like Knish Knosh

We like the round potato knish at the 2nd Ave. Deli.

Edited to add: Katz’s and Sarge’s have knishes. Haven’t tried them at either place, but I would guess they’d be good.

I don’t know what time of day you went to congee village, but we have had good Cantonese dinner dishes there - never actually tried their congee.

Good to see you reporting out your finds

Love this truck, parked outside a local diner. Wonder if they sell tee shirts…

My wite and I tried a knish from Yonah Shimmel on 3 occasions, each time two or three
years apart. Each time after one bite we threw thre rest in the garbage.

We don’t eat lunch so not many opportunities to have sandwiches, it was so hot last night, we decided to order in from insta darling Milano Market.

The one on the right is called Amore and is composed of Prosciutto, burrata, arugula, balsamic glaze on ciabatta, the other is their Milano supremo, it has an awful lot of Prosciutto, soppressata, fresh mozzarella, roasted peppers, basil and tomato on ciabatta

The amore was one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had, the supremo was good but maybe too overstuffed.

Forgot how good a sandwich could be, we have a Regina and an all’antico vinaio in our vicinity that we now want to try.
